Monasteries --- Rab

Rab

Built on a cliff, along the coast, the monastery of St. Andrew defies the waves of time and sea for a millennium. The Benedictine sisters are the spiritual guardians of the city, symbolically placed on its ramparts.

About us

Monastery church of St. Andrew from the 11th century is a three-nave proto-Romanesque basilica that was baroqueized in the coming periods. In the nave of the church ship is the altar of the Mother of God, who has been worshiped as the Miraculous Lady of Rab since the 16th century. In addition to spiritual literature, valuable old writings and historical documents are kept in the monastery library.

Today, in addition to their prayer life, his nuns are engaged in the creation of artistic and handmade works. The Rab cake is their authentic product, which was made in 1177 on the occasion of the arrival of Pope Alexander III. on Rab. They defy modern times, so a small shop of island products, creams, tinctures, oils made from plants that they harvest themselves on the island, is located in one of the most fragrant streets on Rab.

Our place and location

The natural wealth and beauty of the island of Rab has always fascinated many. The "island of happiness", as some call it, dates back to the ancient Romans.

Ever since the Roman days, the central place of cultural life on the island of Rab has been in the city squares and later inside numerous churches. The town of Rab is best known for its facade of 4 bell towers, which together with the town walls form one of the most beautiful architectural ensembles on the Adriatic. The oldest bell tower is St. Andrew, which houses one of the oldest bells in our region, cast in Venice in 1396.
